As we fell in love with the jewelry industry creating Yvette De La Cour, we discovered a darker reality that has plagued this beloved market for centuries.

 The price of high-end jewelry is extortionately overpriced. Naturally sourced gemstones are approximately 70% more expensive than lab grown gemstones. Even though lab grown gemstones are molecularly identical to their natural counterparts, and on average have less contamination within the stone, yet the market value does not reflect this concept. Lab grown stones are becoming more accessible every day, but large jewelry retailers push for naturally sourced gemstones to remain the standard. But if lab grown stones are cheaper, why would they continue to use naturally sourced variants?

The reason large retailers want naturally sourced stones to remain the standard is because they are using slave labor on the backs of foreign communities who have no other option but to export their nations’ valuable resources for despairingly low prices. Many of these communities have been taken over by militant groups like those in the CAR and DCR in Africa. They are forced to give up their livelihood for survival of themselves and their families. Some unethical retailers capitalize on this by purchasing black market stones at rates even cheaper than lab grown companies can produce, yet they continue to keep the prices over 2 times as high.
